What to Do in Scarborough When It Rains: 15 Indoor Activities for 2027
When the Yorkshire Weather Has Other Plans
Let's be honest — the Yorkshire Coast is not always bathed in sunshine. But that's part of its charm. A blustery, rainy day by the sea has its own kind of magic, and Scarborough is well-equipped to keep you entertained whatever the weather throws at you. From world-class museums to escape rooms, cosy cafes to indoor climbing walls, here are 15 brilliant things to do in Scarborough when it rains.
Museums and Culture
1. The Rotunda Museum
One of the finest geological museums in the country, the Rotunda was purpose-built in 1829 to display the fossil collection of William Smith — the father of English geology. The circular building itself is an architectural gem, and the exhibits inside are genuinely fascinating. Scarborough sits on some of the richest fossil-bearing strata in England, and the Rotunda tells that story brilliantly. A must-visit for curious minds of all ages.
2. Scarborough Art Gallery
Housed in a beautiful Italianate villa, Scarborough Art Gallery holds an impressive collection of paintings and sculptures, with a particular focus on the Scarborough School of artists. Entry is free, and the gallery regularly hosts temporary exhibitions. A peaceful, inspiring way to spend a rainy morning.
3. Wood End Museum
The former home of the Sitwell family — one of Britain's most eccentric literary dynasties — Wood End is now a natural history museum with collections covering geology, botany, and zoology. The building itself is worth a visit, and the Sitwells' story is endlessly entertaining.
Family Entertainment
4. SEA LIFE Scarborough
Already mentioned in our family holiday guide, SEA LIFE is a brilliant rainy-day option. The ocean tunnel, shark tanks, and penguin feeding sessions will keep children entertained for hours, and the indoor environment means the weather is completely irrelevant.
5. Scarborough Escape Rooms
Scarborough has several excellent escape rooms, offering 60-minute puzzle-solving adventures for groups of 2–8 people. They're brilliant fun for families, couples, and groups of friends alike — and the sense of achievement when you escape (or the laughter when you don't) makes for a great shared memory.
6. Scarborough Bowling
A classic rainy-day activity, ten-pin bowling is always a crowd-pleaser. There are bowling venues in and around Scarborough that cater to all ages, with bumpers available for younger children.
7. Scarborough Cinema
The Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough is one of the UK's most respected regional theatres, and it also houses a cinema. Check the programme before your visit — there's usually a good mix of mainstream films and independent cinema.
Spa and Wellness
8. Scarborough Spa
The iconic Scarborough Spa complex on the South Bay seafront offers a range of wellness facilities, including a swimming pool, gym, and treatment rooms. It's also a stunning Victorian building with a fascinating history — well worth exploring even if you're not there for a treatment.
9. Your Private Hot Tub at Castle Sunset
This might be our favourite rainy-day activity of all. There is something uniquely wonderful about sitting in a warm, bubbling hot tub while rain falls around you and the sea churns in the distance. At Castle Sunset, our private hot tub is available to guests at any time, and a grey day makes it even more special. Pour yourself a glass of something cold, sink into the warm water, and let the world go by.
Day Trips
10. Whitby: Gothic Atmosphere in Any Weather
Whitby is only 20 miles up the coast from Scarborough, and it's arguably even more atmospheric in the rain. The ruined abbey on the clifftop, the narrow streets of the old town, the independent shops selling jet jewellery and Whitby fudge — all of it takes on an extra layer of drama when the clouds roll in. Add a bowl of fish and chips from one of the famous chippies and you have a perfect rainy-day outing.
11. York: A City Built for Rainy Days
An hour's drive inland, York is one of England's great historic cities and is perfectly designed for wet-weather exploring. The Shambles, York Minster, the Jorvik Viking Centre, the National Railway Museum (free entry) — you could spend several rainy days in York and never run out of things to do.
Food and Drink
12. Afternoon Tea in Scarborough
Several of Scarborough's hotels and tea rooms offer traditional afternoon tea — a perfect way to spend a rainy afternoon. Think finger sandwiches, warm scones with clotted cream, and a pot of Yorkshire tea. Bliss.
13. Cook a Proper Meal at Castle Sunset
One of the great joys of self-catering is having a fully equipped kitchen at your disposal. A rainy afternoon is the perfect excuse to visit one of Scarborough's excellent local food shops — the market, the fishmonger, the deli — and cook something special for the evening. Our packing guide has some tips on what to bring with you.
Active Indoors
14. Indoor Climbing
Scarborough has an indoor climbing wall suitable for beginners and experienced climbers alike. It's a brilliant way to burn off energy on a wet day, and the instructors are excellent with children.
15. Scarborough Leisure Village
The Scarborough Leisure Village complex includes an indoor adventure golf course, soft play area, and various other activities — a reliable option for families with younger children who need to burn off some energy regardless of the weather.
A Rainy Day at Castle Sunset is Never a Bad Day
Here's the thing about staying at Castle Sunset — even a rainy day is a good day. The views from the cottage are spectacular in any weather, the hot tub is always ready, and the sound of rain on the windows while you're warm inside is one of life's genuine pleasures. We've had guests tell us that their rainy days at Castle Sunset were among their favourite parts of the holiday.
Check availability and book your stay today — whatever the weather, you'll be glad you came.
